SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19

The CIIID is working with colleagues across the local, national, and global responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 disease. Our member’s efforts include in-depth research and development activities to understand the virus-host interactions that regulate the innate and adaptive immune response to SARS-CoV-2 infection, to identify immune correlates of protection, build therapeutic antibodies, develop a novel vaccine against SARS-CoV-2, and identifying innate immune interventions to control COVID-19 disease.

The CIIID Leadership team has appointed Dr. Tomas Mustelin to serve as Associate Director of CIIID.  Dr. Mustelin has a strong leadership background and significant translational research experience that will truly benefit the Center.  Dr. Mustelin will replace Dr. Edward Clark who is now our Emeritus Associate Director and Advisor. We thank Dr. Clark for his years of service in leadership and for being a founding member and Associate Director of the CIIID.

New program will focus research on combating Zika virus

A new program delving into how viruses and bacteria attack the fetus, and how the body fights back, has been created at UW Medicine. The research program was made possible after two UW Medicine researchers received almost $19 million in National Institutes of Health grants over the past several months.

CIIID joins forces with collaborators across the country to reveal Zika virus fetal disease

CIIID researchers Drs. Michael Gale, Jr. and Kristina Adams Waldorf and their research teams joined up with investigators at five institutions across the United States to generate a comprehensive understanding of fetal disease associated with Zika virus infection.  Findings of this highly collaborative study were published on July 2, 2018 in the journal Nature Medicine.

CIIID Education Visits Rural Communities to Teach Students about Immunology

On February 8th, the CIIID Education Core participated in Enumclaw’s 6th Annual STEM (Science Technology, Engineering, and Math) Expo. This event draws approximately 2,000 students and their families from all over the area to explore STEM concepts and careers. The Enumclaw STEM Expo is organized by the Enumclaw Schools Foundation, a coalition of teachers, parents, and administrators that works to connect the local K-12 students to professionals in STEM fields. This year’s Expo theme was “Math, the Universal Language”.

CIIID establishes research partnership with Renji Hospital and Jiao Tong University Medical School, Shanghai, China
